Marathon Ministry News for July 2007

July 13

- NOT MOVING YET – You may have heard that Marathon was moving to the former “Calico Shop” property on Miners Drive in Castlewood, VA. We were the only party to bid at the auction on June 9, but the seller was unable to produce a document concerning a second mortgage on the property. Rev. Cooper will write more on this situation later. Pictures of the property have been removed from the website. We will not be moving yet, until God provides something better for us. Please pray for our need of a large warehouse space for our distribution center.

- HAYSI, VA DISTRIBUTION – We held our first food distribution back in the coalfields last month on June 29 since starting the food ministry again in Castlewood. We distributed free food for the needy in Haysi, VA at the AASC Adult Care Facility, located beside Stone Mountain Medical Center. We distributed at 9:30 am and 12 Noon on that day. As at every distribution, we held a service for each group we served proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We served 62 families and led one young man, 12 years old, to Christ on that day.

- JUNE DECISIONS FOR CHRIST – On June 14, one of our monthly distribution days, one gentleman named Anthony accepted Christ as Savior, and one lady named Pam recommitted her life to Christ. Please pray for these two as they continue their walk with Jesus. As long as we are faithful to preach His Word, God will continue to lead the lost to salvation. On June 29 at Haysi VA, we led one young man to Christ. Please pray for this young man as he grows up in Christ.

- NEW PICTURES POSTED – New pictures have been posted on the “Pictures” page, which you can reach through the “Multimedia” page. There is a link button for the “Multimedia” page at the top of our website. Look for more pictures and new video and audio content to be posted in the future.

- ALUMINUM CANS FEED THE POOR – Marathon has started collecting aluminum cans to help raise money to feed the poor in the Appalachia coalfields. One recycler has told us that they will pay $.70 per pound if we have over 100 pounds of aluminum. This is an easy way to help the poor and the environment at the same time. Please save your cans and bring them to the ministry when you have a few bags saved up. You can even ask your neighbors, your co-workers or employer, and your church to save cans for Marathon.

- NEW BOARD MEMBERS – Marathon is pleased to announce the election of two prominent area professionals to its Board of Directors. Stephen L. Childress, D.C. was elected on December 7, 2006. Dwight L. Bailey, M.D. was elected on March 28, 2007. John C. Zanellis of Punta Gorda, Florida, Chairman of the Board states: “We have prayed since Marathon moved to Castlewood in 2003 that God would provide faithful Christian leaders in our new Headquarters area to serve with us to direct our future in the coalfields region and around the world.” God has answered prayer by providing two new board members that have demonstrated by their actions and support that they have hearts for the poor and for Marathon especially.

- JUNE & MAY DISTRIBUTION NUMBERS – In June we served 213 families consisting of 392 adults and 172 children with food and most importantly – the Word of God. In May, we served 160 families consisting of 321 adults and 151 children. Please pray that God continues to send us those in physical and spiritual need and that we will continually be able to meet those needs.
