Marathon Ministry News for May 2007 (archived) May 2 - "TOGETHER FOR CHILDREN DAY" DISTRIBUTION – We held a special distribution of “Goodie” bags for the children of Russell County at the Lebanon Town Park in cooperation with the Department of Social Services at the Together for Children Day on April 28. This day was in honor and recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month. We gave out over 600 goodie bags. Each bag contained a pack of vanilla wafer cookies, a couple snack cans of Pringles chips, a bag of Quaker rice snacks, a brand-new toothbrush and toothpaste, and Christian children’s literature. We also gave out a lot of great Sunday School literature for kids ranging all the way from preschool to junior high. We pray that the literature we gave out and the love we showed would touch some young person’s heart for Jesus. - WLRV RADIO FIRST ANNUAL GOSPEL SING – WLRV held its First Annual Spring Gospel Concert on the evening of April 28. The concert featured some outstanding regional Gospel talent and was also broadcast on WLRV 1380AM for the entire evening. Attendees were encouraged to bring non-perishable food items for the needy, and WLRV donated all of the food collected, a total of 175 lbs, to Marathon to help the poor in the Appalachia coalfields. - MARATHON'S FIRST ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT – We had a day of fun and fellowship on April 21 at Clear Creek Golf Club in Bristol, VA. God provided a perfect, beautiful day for golf, and 43 golfers played in our first annual tournament. We had two major sponsors, sponsors for all 18 tees and holes, and 46 donors for prizes. Ken’s Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep and Bostic Ford cosponsored a Hole-in-One Car on Hole 18 (winner’s choice of 2007 PT Cruiser or 2007 Ford Focus), but unfortunately nobody won a new car. The ladies from the Lebanon Memorial UMC “Fellowship Team” also provided a wonderful dinner of hamburgers, hot dogs, and some wonderful desserts. We raised enough money from the tournament to buy 25,000 lbs of food for the poor in the Appalachia coalfields. We thank all of our sponsors, donors, golfers and volunteers for making this event possible. Look for pictures posted as soon as possible. - LEISURE TOWERS DISTRIBUTION AND CHURCH PARTNERSHIP – We had a major food distribution at Leisure Park Towers in Bristol, VA on April 6. We have a close relationship with Leisure Towers since Marathon was in Bristol, TN for 10 years. At Leisure, we served 144 households total, consisting of 147 individuals. We distributed a food box, frozen food, and other items to each apartment in the building, which was a great blessing for the elderly low-income people who live there. We served three groups that day, and each group also received a special Easter salvation message since the distribution was on Good Friday. The Beech Grove United Methodist Church and Maranatha Sunday School Class, from Bristol VA, partnered with us to make the distribution possible. About 17 church members volunteered on different occasions to pack food boxes and deliver the food at Leisure Towers. Besides over 93 volunteer-hours donated, Beech Grove also donated funds to cover half the cost for the Leisure Towers distribution. This partnership is a mighty blessing for the ministry. If your church is interested in partnering with Marathon Ministry for a distribution, please CONTACT US. - MARCH DISTRIBUTION NUMBERS – In March, we served 150 families consisting of 282 adults and 133 children with food, blankets, and most importantly – the Word of God. Please pray that God continues to send us those in physical and spiritual need and that we will continually be able to meet those needs. - WEBSITE UPDATES – Updates have been slow recently as a result of other activities and events happening with the ministry. Some of these activities and events are highlighted in this news update such as the Golf Tournament and two special distributions.
