Marathon Ministry Newsletter for June 2006 (archived)

Jesus said, “I have called you friends.”
John 15:15 June 2006

So I also address you as Friend,

Dear Friend,

* * * * * Look for Us on Google* * * * *

Our latest blessing on the internet. Go to Google, and type “Marathon Ministry” and you will find that we are number one for that search. There is a fountain of information about us there. Thanks to Dave Snell and thanks to all of you who love us, pray for us, and support us in our work for the poor.

* * * * * We Need Volunteers In The New Offices * * * * *

God has blessed us in the new offices at the Milton Shopping Center. Chase and I spent weeks cleaning, painting and moving in our “new” furniture and office equipment. We need help with the office work. Answering the phone, filing, typing, sending out mail, and other tasks. Volunteer time is arranged to accommodate your family, church and work needs first. If you have office skills and can fit in a few hours a week, please call me to arrange a meeting at the office to discuss the opportunity to be involved in a totally Christ-centered outreach to the poor of the coalfields.

We would love to have a retired office administrator or secretary or bookkeeper.

* * * * * Newsletter Going Quarterly After This Issue - BUT * * * * *

BUT you can see our regularly updated news at our website on the internet - www.marathonministry.org. Go to the “news page” and you’ll know almost as quickly as we do what God is doing in Marathon. We’re excited to bring you the latest from God’s word under “Monthly Sermon” along with current events.

* * * * * Are You Praying for a Truck & Warehouse? * * * * *

If your answer is yes, then we need you to pray harder.

* * * * * “Church Partners for the Poor” * * * * *

Another church has joined with us as a “Church Partner for the Poor”. There are now five: Brick Baptist Church, Calvary Baptist, House of the Lord, Pleasant Hill Baptist, all of Castlewood; and Harman Memorial Baptist, Maxie, VA. To find out how your church or group can become a “Partner for the Poor” just write, fax, email, or call our office for information.

* * * * * We’re still “Feeding His Sheep” (John 21:15-17) * * * * *

On May 27th we had our first food distribution at our new offices. It was cramped and the food was stacked to the ceiling. Many needy families came, were prayed for and heard the word of God as we preached it undiluted to them. They got nourishing food orders each worth over $100.00 at the store. No junk food. I do not believe in that. We still do not have a warehouse/distribution center, but we’re praying hard and waiting on God.

NOTE: Our hand-carved Israel Cross necklaces are once again available for donation at our office for $15 or to ship for $15 + $5 s/h.*

* * * * * We Commend A Business * * * * *

Tops & Bottoms clothing and shoe store in Wise, VA has area billboard signs. We thank God for this family business that is not afraid to express their love for the Lord Jesus Christ. And we recommend them to anyone in the area. Here are a few of their sign quotes:

“Pull Over! Pray & Ask Jesus to Save You”
“Homosexuality – The Bible calls it vile affection”
“Alas Sinful Nation You Have Abandoned the Lord – Isaiah 1:4”
“Jesus Christ – God’s Gift – Will You Receive Him? – Do It Today”
“What You’re Putting B-4 Jesus He May Take Away”

* * * * * Encouraging Words Received * * * * *

In the mail on June 6th. “God bless Mr.& Mrs. P. Cooper & the Ministry.” (signed) Joe Vasques. Joe was one of our first volunteers in Massachusetts in the ‘80’s. He still helps support the work.

Another note received: “I’d like to sincerely thank you for your prayers and for sending your anointing oil to me before my surgery. I’m a living testimony to the power of prayer and the healing mercies of our Savior!! While I’d like to thank you personally, I wanted to take a moment to let you know how deeply your prayers touched my heart and spirit. I hope to meet you soon and thank you in person. Until then, Godspeed to you with this wonderful Ministry! May you and Chase be a light in our community and show people how wonderful it is to be a child of God. Warmest regards & prayers.” (Name omitted)

NOTE: Chase and I have been praying that God would use us and Marathon Ministry to be a light to the community and the world.

* * * * * Marathon’s Prayer List * * * * *

I still have in the office every one of my prayer lists that began on April 14th 1984. God has blessed me to see so many answered, especially in my own life.

If you want to be on the prayer list, just call, write or email us with the request. I guarantee that many of our friends around the country and the world will be praying for you.

* * * * A Word From Chase * * * *

“When Life Blows Your Tent Over” - Recently, Marathon set up a tent at the Clinch River Days in St. Paul, VA - a town festival type of event. The event started on Friday evening and ended on Sunday morning. Phil and I arrived later on Friday than most other vendors, but everybody was rained on and washed out that night. The wind blew over the tent next to us, and we helped upright it. Our tent stayed put with the help of some 2x4’s and concrete blocks. Saturday was much nicer since the sun was out. Sunday, however, the wind came back with a vengeance. It apparently didn’t like that Marathon’s tent stayed put on Friday evening, so it came back Sunday morning and blew the tent flat on its backside. That was the sign to pack up the tent, but I didn’t leave just yet. Even when life blows your tent over, the Lord still has a purpose for you. I stuck around to read my Bible and listen to some Christian music, and the Lord led me to talk for a couple hours to the lady who ran the concessions trailer next to Marathon’s spot. We had pleasant conversation, talking about the Lord, and she even gave me a free dinner. I prayed for her, specifically that her presence at other events and her smile would bless other individuals in the name of Christ. If I had become discouraged and went home when the tent blew over, I would have missed that mighty blessing. Always remember “all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).
