“Life Is A Marathon”

Reading newspapers, these words came to me. “What’s wrong in America?”

One AP article tells of a farmer charged with assault for holding a thief at gunpoint until the sheriff arrived from 15 miles away because there is no police force in his small town. The thief had a lesser charge. That’s What’s wrong in America! Criminals get off while victims suffer, even at the hands of the authorities.

William & Mary College in Williamsburg, founded as a divinity school, removes an historic bronze cross from its historic place in Wren chapel. That’s What’s wrong in America! The God who provides all prosperity to such a place is out!

In Tennessee there’s a fight with some honest legislators trying to get a 1994 bill rescinded so that local governments can ban smoking. That’s What’s wrong in America! In 1994 tobacco companies lobbied to get the existing bill passed which prevented local governments from banning smoking. Does anybody care about those who suffer from cancer, emphysema and other diseases caused by both first and second hand smoke?

In Erwin, Tennessee a company wants a permit for an incinerator to burn radioactive waste. Its president says “the community should not be concerned”. “What’s wrong in America?” We pay no attention to the article just a few pages away citing “smelly, orange-yellow and green-colored snow covering 40 square miles in Siberia. Numbers 35:33 instructs: “So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye are.”

A woman in Nashville pleads guilty to killing a mother and her 3-year-old daughter so she could steal the mother’s infant son. “What’s wrong in America?” This woman, sentenced to two life sentences without parole will be supported by tax money for the rest of her life. And she will probably protest her treatment in prison as violation of her civil rights. When did we stray from God’s law? “Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.” (Exodus 21:24)

Payday loans, legalized theft from the poor flourish. “What’s wrong in America?” Virginia legislators turn down a bill limiting interest to 36% annual rate, still outrageous though the current rate charged is up to 391%. Sounds like the old-time knee breaker lenders without the baseball bats or tire irons. Compromise plan would limit interest to 72%. The Bible speaks clearly about usury! He that gives with usury, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? He shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him. (Ezekiel 18:13)

“School bus driver charged with rape of 16 year old student”. “VA House leader gets “gift” of $8,500 in BMS race tickets (34) from Sprint.” For what? “Senator John Kerry calls our United States a “pariah”. And nobody calls it treason. People openly curse our president. Churches burn and Jews are persecuted.

Jesus said: “Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you.” (John 15:20)

And it goes on and on and on. “What’s wrong in America?”
